So many questions start to form in the mind when I am thinking about my early days in the game, ‘I want to know what was the first Working Name for Minecraft’. I can remember that it was called ‘Miyuki Online’ back then. For whatever reason, we had a very unique name at the time. But today, after almost ten years since I left that company, it dawned on me… I wonder what was the first Working Name for Minecraft?
When we first got started, or so I thought: we were simply called Just Add Water. And I guess we did what we were told and stuck with that for a while. But then one of our marketing guys decided we needed a better name. So we changed it to Just Add Water. I think he may have liked the name better back then. I’m not sure if he thought we should change the name or not. Either way, it didn’t matter, because we would get on with our work and stick with what worked. The first name that we came up with for minecraft was simply Minecraft. And I believe the name is still used today.
So, back to what was the first Working Name for Minecraft? When we first got started, we used the word ‘Miyuki’ as it stuck in our minds. That is what the game is named after. As for the original Working Name for Minecraft, we called it Miyuki Online. However, when we wanted to change it to our own name, we used the word ‘Merryland’ which is a nice name, by the way.
That’s right, we did change our name for one thing or another: but I have never heard him refer to it as a ‘working name’. Was he trying to hide his company’s name from us? I really don’t think so. I believe he was just trying to get us all started on a fresh new chapter in our creative career. So, what was the first Working name for Minecraft? My personal opinion is that it wasn’t a name at all. I believe it was ‘Miyuki Online.’ Happy gaming!
I was working on the game ‘Guided Ruin’ at the time: and I believe my programmer pal mentioned how his favorite game was MineCraft. Apparently, he had found the concept for his game while he was looking through some older games. MineCraft was one of the first games that he had downloaded and was hooked. In fact, he had the Java version and the mod-pack ‘forestry’ that I mentioned above.
So, what was the first Working name for minecraft then? I never found out. I never got to find out what the name was when we changed the name. Who knows if I ever would have discovered it if I hadn’t deleted the old MineCraft files.
